English Civil War Wargame armies DBX style bases

ADD TO WISHLIST >

ECW Wargaming armies for use with most current wargaming rules as a substitute for actual figures.

Wargame units on DbX type bases for use with most current Powder and shot/ English Civil War Wargaming rules.  (Note DbX bases can be used in blocks to make units for most other sets of rules).

There are six sheets of counters illustrating New Model Army, Scots/ Irish and typical ECW units in red, blue and white uniforms, with bases shown Cavalry, pike shot, dragoons and artillery (small, medium and large guns + Howitzers).

In addition there are units for Cuirassier, Border Horse Lancers, Clansmen, and skirmishers (folorn hope and sharpshooters).

THe New Model 'figures' are more uniform in posture and colours to reflect the fact that they did have more standard uniforms.   Others have a range of uniform shadees, some with buff coats, and in differing poses.

These are 'manaquin figures' rather than graphic representations.  Please take a look at the samples included in the free literature to ensure that they work for you.

The counters are alll on bases 40mm wide and 15mm deep for foot, and 30mm deep for Cavalry.   This allows the construction of blocks of troops suitable for most rules.  The illustrated figures are equivalent to looking down at 15mm figures - Ie there are generally four close order troops on a base.

Just grabbed these!!! Any chance you might do Poles/Swedes/Ottomans, etc? We play DBR and By Fire and Sword. They are different basing schemes, but a standard 40mm frontage would work well. There were many armies in the mid to late 1600's fighting in eastern Europe; Poles and Swedes, Ottomans, Tartars and Cossacks, Muscovites, Danes, Transylvanians, Brandenburg/Prussians, Holy Roman Empire, and others. You could make some specific sets for the Poles and Turks and very generic Dragoons, Pike men, Cuirassiers, etc. for the Germans, Swedes and HRE.

I may get to this eventually, but I am currently working on Colonial Period figures (Zulu, Boers, and British Etc), so this could be a while away I am afraid, but I will put it on the to do list - they would be challenging and colourful.

Please keep up your work on the Colonial period; I cannot wait, especially with a new version of " The Sword & the Flame" rules to be released this year. Any projection on a release date for these counters?

I personally use the Blue counters for 30 Year War Swedes and the White counters for the Holy Roman Empire. I would suggest checking out the Junior General website topdowns for counters for the Ottoman Turks.

Could you please change the "Falom Hope" counters to "Forlorn Hope"?

Although I automatically replied to your note accepting that there was a typo, i have since checked this and this is not the case. The Counters do say Falorn Hope, though I appreciate that 'rn' does look similar to 'm' on a small font. it looks wrong if i make the spacing larger.

Thanks for reply. I think the troop type is normally styled "Forlorn Hope" instead of "Falorn Hope." Nevertheless, I still love these counters, and have used them for several different rules sets.

Any chance for "Commanded Shot" and "Clubmen" counters? No rush as I really want some Colonial Wars counters!

Thanks for the update. Will you focus on the British and the Zulus first? May I make a few requests for this set of counters which truly look beautiful and appropriate for this period? Can you make foot counters with three figures as opposed to four similar to the American Civil War Counters since the "The Pikeman's Lament" rules use units of six and twelve figures? Also, that set of rules also has a small foot unit (6 figures) styled 'Commanded Shot' for skirmishers and a large foot unit (12 figures) called 'Clubmen' for 'disgruntled country folk,' ill-trained militia, etc. Designated counters for these units would be appreciated if possible. If you need any additional information in this regard, please let me know.

I will add a clubmen unit, but alas i cannot go back and do 3 men bases as this would be a lot of work. The Clubmen unit will follow shortly.

I appreciate your adding a "Clubmen" counter. I understand that the 3 men bases would be too much work, and I will just use three counters per unit instead of four. Keep up the good work on the Colonial Wars counters: Very much looking forward to shouting, "Usuthu," in the near future as the 24th infantry regiment prepares to fire a Martini-Henry volley as the Zulu impi charges home!

Thank you for your prompt reply. I understand that you will focus first on African Colonial Wars next, and I will assume that you mean 19th and early 20th Centuries British, French and German and their native allies against the Zulus, Dervishes, and Bedouins, etc.? The motion pictures "Zulu," "Beau Geste," and "Khartoum." Steady regulars versus brave natives. Do you know how you will base them, and a rough idea of the conflicts covered?

I really appreciate the comment. You spend the hours producing these things and don't know how they will be received so comments are all appreciated.
I will do the Colonial range next - though I see the American War of Independence as a separate thing. i will pitch at the African Colonial Wars first. This will take a couple of months to produce.

An instant purchase for me based upon the author's "Ancient & Medieval Wargame Counters" and "American Civil War Wargame Counters." I will immediately put these counters to use with Osprey Publishing's "The Pikeman's Lament," but they will also help with filling out armies in "Irregular Wars: Conflict at the World's End." If you have access to a color printer, card stock paper, scissors, glue and pre-cut 40mm bases from a retailer like Litko, you can have very attractive armies in a fraction of the time necessary to paint and base miniatures, and at a fraction of the cost. Of course, these counters require less storage than miniatures, and are much more easily transportable.

If Mr. Curran would indulge me, I would love an update on his Colonial Wars Wargame Counters?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
