"Commander’s Log - Solardate 11.12.30
Due to an unforeseen systems malfunction, while passing through an anomaly, our warp drive has lost all power. Additionally, it has managed to power down all of our weapons systems onboard the U.S.S. Frontiersman. Usually, such a malfunction would be little more than a minor setback. It may even prove a useful piece of scientific and engineering research as the crew works on solving the problem and figuring out why the anomaly effects out ship in the first place.

However, things seem a bit more dire for us at the moment. The anomaly was right on the outer reaches of Kornathian space and we’ve been set adrift near one of their war parties. They have no desire to stop and discuss the situation or work out terms of peaceful negotiation. Instead, they have opened fire upon us.

I, as the commanding officer of this ship, can not simply let this be. I have men and women aboard I need to protect. As such, we will continue to work on fixing the warp drive and powering up our weapons, all the while we will fight off these unwanted attacks. It seems our choices are either to get the warp drive back up and running, so we can light jump out of here, or defeat the capital ship that is leading the war party against us."

Charge Stations! is a science fiction roll+write game where a single player takes command of the U.S.S. Frontiersman. It is up to the player to repair the ship all while fighting off incoming attacks. This is done by rolling handfuls of six-sided dice (D6s) which represent the ship’s crew members and assigning them to various tasks around the ship. All you need to play is a pencil, some dice, and this book.

Hi Noah,

Great game, love everything Sci-Fi. Just a quick question on evasive maneuvers. do you check after each seperate attack by the enemy in the same turn or do you add up all the damage and then roll for evasion and apply what's left?

You check evasion for each separate attack. If the Capital Ship fires, you may check for evasion. When each individual fighter track fires, you may roll for evasion.

My main thing right now is Dungeon Crawl types, for sure. I've started a number of Cyberpunk games in the past, but always ended up dissatisfied with the end result, so they've been scrapped until I can think up something better.

The game is fun but trying to warp out is almost impossible. With 7 dice, the odds of rolling all 6s is 1 in 279,936. Down to 6 dice, it's 1 in 46,656. With 5 dice, it's 1 in 7,776. Even getting down to 2 dice means a 1 in 36 chance. This was making the game last forever. At best getting down to 1 die, you have a 1 in 6 chance of rolling that 6, but it still makes the game drag. I modified it a bit as follows:

Take the average of a d6 = 3.5 and multiplying it by the number of dice required to roll to test warp. So for 7, this = 24.5. Roll the 7 dice and add them up... if they are greater than 24.5, you warp out. For 3 dice, you need to beat 10.5 when totaling up the results of three dice rolls. And when rolling just a single die, all you need to roll is 4, 5, or 6 to warp out (greater than 1 x 3.5).

This makes it a little more likely you'll survive but not 100%.

Awesome. Thanks for the feedback on this. I had considered making it a success on 5 and 6 or even 4, 5, and 6 for this roll. Your idea works well and I'm glad you found an interesting way to implement a home brew rule that makes the game run smoother.

I hadn't this time around because of the way the sheet was designed being so ingrained with the actual art. However, now that you've asked, I'll try to make a bit of time to make one and post it as a separate download file with the game. Thanks!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
