SNARL 2023

Worth it just for 'Tanks For the Apocalypse', if you play 'Space Station Zero' (and you should) the additions are also worth it.

Fun and innovative game system. Being miniature agnostic I have played it with such a wide variety of minis from the serious to the ridiculous. Be aware combat is fast and deadly but dying can be a benefit in the campaign game.

MAJESTIC 13
by James C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/14/2023 13:40:20

The latest game from Snarling Badger is primarily a solo skirmish adventure in the likeness of Xcom where your small 5 member team runs boss battles against a variety of alien baddies. The theme is great and the rules are easy to digest. Movement rates are very high for this scale and the monsters are tough. Careful planning is needed to bring down the enemies. Several of the base choices seem obviously better than others. I'm enjoying my time with the game.. I concur with others that the rulebook looks great, but is difficult to navigate and sorely lacks an index. If you like the theme and solo skirmish play, this is worth investigating

Great ruleset! It is primarily a solo skirmish game with agnostic minis very reminiscent of X-COM. I love it!

I am excited to play this game with my weekly group. They aren't really big tabletop game players but this game has just enough role-playing to get them started.

MAJESTIC 13
by Nicholas S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/18/2023 23:29:06

I rarely write reviews, but I debated between giving this a 1 and 2 stars , I went with 1 because I think this maybe one of the worst war games I have ever played. But the bones of this game are great, it just feels like an alpha playtest being sold as a complete game. (Maybe it is an "Early Access" title in which case I will amend my review.) For reference I played about 6 hours including team creation, and did 4 missions 3 Alien hunts and 1 Special Mission.

The Good:

  • Good Setting
  • Fun monsters with cool abilties (not stats)
  • The campaign bones could be really good.
  • If you are willing to tweak and write alot of house rules and balance the game you would have a lot of fun.

The Bad

  • Movement. Everyone is so fast aliens move 25" on a 3x3 board, even your soldiers are incredibly fast. It doesnt feel very tactical.
  • Equipment rules: Enemies have huge HP pools and basic guns feel terrible, in my 3 big hunt missions I only got one alien even under half health, then I felt very lucky to do even that. Also some advantages dont make sense.
  • End of Mission Rewards: They felt terrible. This is probably the thing I didn't vibe with at all, you only get a bonus for killing the near impossible alien if you can do it 3 turns, which is mathematically very unlikely. Otherwise the best strategy is to do the secondaries then evac on turn 1, which gets the best possible result if no one dies. Even on the special mission if I had some how won (I got close) it still didn't get me a cool reward. There are some good ideas here, but they feel unplay tested.
  • Stats: All the stats in this game feel very off, like they weren't play tested properly. Which is a theme of my time playing this game.
  • Poor book layout and rules reference.

I'm summary, I was very hyped for the first 30 minutes then was crushed. Very disappointed.

I really love this game and planning on running it at Claymore (Edibugh), Scotlands largest wargames show in August. I have page through up on my YouTube channel with a full indepth review coming soon over on Gamers Web https://gamerswebweb.wordpress.com/2023/06/09/a-look-through-majestic-13-snarling-badger-studios/

A really neat game with some great mechanics that can really make players stop and think about their actions Really looking forward to playing more games and getting some videos done soon and getting my hands on the card deck. Hghly recommended Marc

MAJESTIC 13

The actual rules presented here are fairly easy to learn and lend themselves to a lot of fun. Majestic 13 presents you with a dynamic campaign that'll keep you on the edge of your seat as you roll the dice in a desperate bid to exterminate the alien threat and survive.

However! This book is absolutely infuriating to use in digital format because it lacks proper indexing or even just a hyperlinked TOC. These are not difficult things to implement into a PDF and I am frankly baffled by neither being present.

A couple of times the rules also commit the cardinal sin of burying critical rule information inside a block of text without highlighting it.

Since this is already SBS's third book, I can't in good conscience give them a pass on these issues. They have a massive impact on interacting with the product, and not in a good way. I hope they update the PDF in the future with proper indexing, or at least do that for their next release.

If you liked Reign in Hell then you will like this, like the main game this is laid out well and easy to follow.

I recommended Ulvers 'Silence teaches you how to sing' and the original Hellraiser soundtrack for mood music.

Great little skirmish game, rules are simple enough to pick up for beginners and has enough meat on its bones for seasoned gamers. Everythings laid out clearly and easy to follow. If you have the cash spare I highly recommend this.

I cant wait to try Space Station Zero, if its half as fun as this Im gonna love it.

Reign in Hell

Reign in Hell is a great skirmish on so many levels. If you are a veteran player, you'll enjoy the unique game mechanic and the chance to dust off some old miniatures. For new gamers, it's easy to learn and does not require a huge investment. It's not a heavy system and you won't spend half your time with your nose in the rulebook! Games last about 30-60 mins and the game area is on anything upto 3'x3'.

I absolutely love this game. The dice mechanics are easy to use and the game play is a blast. The book layout and design is beautiful. We have been planning 1 room a week for a few months now and every game is more exciting than the last.

The authors were known to me for a while now on YouTube. I primarily followed them for painting advice as I never really played any tabletop war games. I even have hundreds of dollars in GW minis with only a couple of real games under my belt; thats how much I'm all about the painting.

When my friend showed me this game, and I realized who made it, I was blown away.

It is everything a kitbasher & painter could want for freedom, and the game is so simple and robust that it spurs the painting on that much quicker.

Within 12 hours of reading this, I had my cabal all picked out. Within 48 hours, I have my cabal of 7 completely kitbashed. With matching foam terrain and boards on the way, I should be throwing dice by the end of the week.

Fantastic work, grossly underpriced, and worth every penny & page.

I discovered this game through the trapped under plastic podcast. It's amazing, I can play with my kids (much funnier than against, less issue about one loosing) or alone (which is nice because I have a hard time finding available friends to plays with), great great game. The story (I still haven't finished the campaign) is very compelling and I want to continue exploring.
